About the NST The Norwegian Society of Texas (N.S.T.) was organized on March 8, 1975. At the organizational meeting, officers were elected and direction was given to incorporate. Articles of Incorporation were filed with the Secretary of State, State of Texas, on March 25, 1975. The Norwegian Society of Texas is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 organization. NST is the only statewide organization for Norwegian Texans. Since it was founded, NST has lived up to the objective: “To Enjoy, Preserve and Promote Our Norwegian Heritage” and has accomplished a wide variety of historical and educational goals. Historical Preservation Many historical markers have been established through the cooperation of NST and the Texas Historical Commission. Genealogic Research Interested and expert members of NST can help you trace your roots.
Assistance also is provided through cooperation with “Nordmanns-Forbundet”,
an international organization that promotes solidarity between Norway
and Norwegians abroad and friends of Norway, and furthers the cause of
Norwegian culture and Norwegian interests. Language Classes Norwegian language classes are offered and have continuously been offered by the Snorre Chapter since 1982. Scholarship Fund A Scholarship Fund was established in March 1982. Deadline to apply
every year is December 5. Cultural Scholarships There is no deadline for Cultural Scholarships. Organization As in the days of the Vikings, NST is governed by the Althing, which is elected by members each year. Each chapter elects its own officers to conduct local activities. In practice, local chapters have wide freedom in conducting their affairs. As a result, each chapter is different. Still, however, membership in one permits participation in all others. Multi-chapter activities are common.
